What Is a Collar?

A collar—often referred to as a shaft collar—is a ring-shaped component that fits around a shaft and is secured in place using a set screw or clamping mechanism. Once installed, collars prevent axial movement and help control the position of components on the shaft.

Collar Options Available

Options in this category include solid set screw, single split, and double split collars, each suited for different application requirements:

Solid Set Screw Collars: Use one or more set screws to secure the collar directly to the shaft. This style offers a compact, economical solution for light to moderate loads where precise shaft alignment is not critical. Commonly used in general-purpose machinery and equipment.

Single Split Collars: Feature a single cut through the collar body that allows it to clamp evenly around the shaft when tightened. Single split collars provide improved holding power and reduced shaft marring compared to set screw styles, making them suitable for applications requiring better alignment and adjustability.

Double Split Collars: Include two clamping sections that apply uniform pressure around the shaft. This design offers the strongest holding power and best alignment control, making double split collars ideal for heavier loads, precision applications, and situations where frequent repositioning is required.
