Heavy Hex Nuts
Heavy hex nuts are high-strength nuts with a thicker profile and wider bearing surface than standard hex nuts. American Bolt Corporation supplies heavy hex nuts for mechanical, industrial, and manufacturing applications where stud bolts or threaded rod are used to clamp flanges, equipment, and mechanical assemblies.
Heavy hex nuts are commonly used by mechanical contractors in piping systems and equipment installations where higher clamp loads and stable fastening are required.
For structural steel erection applications, heavy hex nuts are handled separately. Visit our Structural Nuts page for structural-grade requirements.
What Is a Heavy Hex Nut?
A heavy hex nut is similar to a standard hex nut but is larger across the flats and thicker, providing increased bearing area and improved load distribution. This makes heavy hex nuts well suited for stud bolt assemblies, especially where one nut or two nuts are used to clamp components together. Heavy hex nuts are commonly specified in:
- Mechanical piping systems
- Flange connections
- Equipment mounting
- Stud bolt assemblies using one or two nuts
They are frequently paired with stud bolts or threaded rod in mechanical installations.
ASTM Grades & Material Options
American Bolt Corp supplies heavy hex nuts in the following commonly specified ASTM grades for mechanical and industrial use:
- ASTM A194 Grade 2H - Heat-treated carbon steel heavy hex nuts for high-strength mechanical fastening applications.
- ASTM A563 Grade A - General-purpose carbon steel heavy hex nuts used in mechanical and industrial assemblies.
- ASTM A194 Grade 8 - 304 stainless steel heavy hex nuts used where corrosion resistance is required in mechanical systems.
- ASTM A194 Grade B8 - 316 stainless steel heavy hex nuts used for enhanced corrosion resistance in more aggressive mechanical and process environments.
If your specification calls out ASTM A194 2H, ASTM A563 Grade A, ASTM A194 Grade 8, or ASTM A194 Grade B8, you’re in the right place.
